Hey everyone I am seeing if anyone has any good ideas as for materials that they would think would work well in cold climates for building. For my project there will be 1 main lodge/restaurant with residential above. Then surrounding the property will be 15 or so little cabins with a bedroom, bathroom small kitchen, nothing big just big enough to be able to house a couple or a small family.
If anyone one has any great ideas feel free to post away.
Hey Arvi. Check out the website for the Cold Climate Housing Research Center in Alaska. Its an institution dedicated to researching and testing building materials in cold climates. The REMOTE wall technique looks like a pretty simple idea. http://www.cchrc.org/building
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jeremy! this should help out a lot with my project.
ReplyDeleteHi Arvi,
ReplyDeleteI was looking at your project and going through your renewable energy sources. Have you looked into wind power? With the size of the property and the fact that it is on a lake, it seems wind would be plentiful. There are some ski resorts that are going that route.

Another thing that could be looked into is if your resort can go with that many green technologies, perhaps they can look into selling carbon offsets, something that farmers are starting to do. Here is a quick link to selling offsets.

Just a few ideas I thought I'd throw out.
Peace

Have you thought about log cabin style houses? Wood is an excellent insulator and has been proven to work well in cold climates. You can simply buy a log cabin kit that you can assemble if you want to save some money. It's also a local resource which will help if your looking to make your buildings LEED certified.
ReplyDeleteMight want to take a look at the LEED website,

or a local log home manufacturer's website that sells kits,

Chris,
ReplyDeleteI never really thought about using wind power, but you make a really good point and that link has lots of good information and I will defiantly try and work it into my project.
Brad,
I wasnt planning on making my building LEED but now that you brought it up I think it would be a really good idea to do that. Thanks!
